Trekking in Nepal > Helambu Trek
Along with the Langtang trek, the Helambu trek is the other route that lies close to Kathmandu. The start of the trekking route is actually inside the Kathmandu Valley. For ease of access this is a good choice for a first time trek.
Starting at the northern edge of the Kathmandu Valley, the trekking route climbs up through the forest of the Shivapuri Watershed National Park and meanders up hill through mixed farming villages which are reminiscent of the way outer Kathmandu used to look before becoming the great metropolis that it is today.
Right through this part of Nepal you will be meeting a wide range of people from the hill tribes, especially Tamangs and Sherpas. The chance to experience their unique way of life is one of the highlights.
As the trail climbs steadily up to the north the views of the Langtang mountain range become more and more impressive.
Finally, after crossing the Tharepati Pass the landscape changes to one of sub alpine vegetation. The high point of the trek is reached at the lakes of Gosainkund, one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus in Nepal.
After passing these lakes the trail then enters the Langtang National Park from where it eventually winds its way down to the Kathmandu to Langtang road.
