Trekking in Nepal > Gokyo Valley Trek

If you want to trek to the Everest region but are looking for something different, then try the Gokyo Valley.

Located directly west of the Khumbu Valley, Gokyo offers a chance to experience less crowded trails and spectacular scenery without losing any of the excitement of being up close to the Himalayan giants.

Until recently, the Gokyo Valley was only inhabited during the Summer months when locals would bring their herds of yaks up to graze. Even today, there are no permanent settlements in the valley except for scattered trekking lodges that have been built to cater for the increasing number of visitors who have heard of the unique mountain environment here.

The valley is best reached by leaving the main trail above Namche Bazar from where the Dudh Kosi river eventually finds its source in the glacier that flows from Cho Oyu, the eighth highest peak on earth and the mountain that dominates the Gokyo Valley.

Other routes into the valley involve crossing high passes that connect Gokyo with the valleys to the east and west. These passes, while high and challenging, can provide a unique experience for budding climbers.

One of the best known features of the Gokyo Valley is the string of glacial lakes that is to be found in the upper section of the valley. Often frozen during winter, these lakes, in the warmer months, provide a temporary home to migratory birds who can be seen floating on their azure waters.

As a destination in itself or as an addition to the standard Everest trek, the Gokyo Valley is an unforgettable experience.
