Trekking in Nepal > Annapurna Base Camp

The trek up to Annapurna base Camp is one of the most popular short treks in Nepal. Also known as the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek, visitors are rewarded with an almost unbroken 360 degree panorama of Himalayan giants.

Starting from the lakeside town of Pokhara, from where the Annapurna range dominates the northern skyline, the Annapurna Sanctuary trek provides a diverse range of hill and mountain scenery in a relatively short space of time.

Initially passing through farming land with the green hills neatly terraced, the trail eventually enters a narrow river gorge that leads you through the "gateway' of the Sanctuary. As you enter through this, the only entrance to the Sanctuary, you are confronted with an incredible panorama of peaks, the best known of which is Machhapuchhre, the Fishtail Mountain.

Every visitor should stay in the Sanctuary for at least two nights to experience the unique magic of this place. The main camping site is at Annapurna Base Camp which is the starting point for ascents of the massive east face of Annapurna 1. This mountain, the tenth highest peak on earth was the first of the eight thousand metre peaks ever to be climbed.

Travel back, through a mixture of unspoiled forests and scattered villages inhabited by some of the diverse hill tribes found throughout Nepal. Experience their traditional way of life and unique cultures before descending finally back to relax alongside the lake in Pokhara.
